Dave and John Kunst in Waseca Crowd. About 3 P.M. on June 20, 1970 in front of the Waseca, Minnesota State Theatre Dave and John Kunst started the first verified walk around the world. August 22, 1970 Pete Kunst showed up in Ligonier, Pennsylvania from Santa Ana, California to walk with Dave and John for three days. It was the only time the three Kunst brothers walked together on the world walk. When Pete said good-bye he made a promise that if anything happened to either one of his brothers he would be willing to step in and help finish the walk. Two years later when John Kunst was shot and killed by bandits in Afghanistan Pete would fulfill that promise.

Kunst Brothers Walking into New York City on October 7, 1970 the brothers accomplished the first leg of their walk around the world. They walked to Battery Park and touched the Atlantic Ocean. Willie Makeit was taken back to Waseca, Minnesota where the mule was kept by the Miller family and their 22 kids until the finish of the walk. The second leg of the Earth-Walk started on December 21, 1970 on the shores of the Atlantic at Cabo da Roca with Willie Makeit II a mule the brothers received from the the Portuguese Tourist Bureau. John took a picture of Dave and Willie Makeit II when they walked through Lisbon, Portugal. Language was an immediate problem for the Kunst brothers and that problem would continue across Europe and Asia.
