Dave and John Kunst in Waseca Crowd. About 3 P.M. on June 20, 1970 in front of the Waseca, Minnesota State Theatre Dave and John Kunst started the first verified walk around the world. Hundreds of people gathered to witness the two brothers walk East out of town with their mule Willie Makeit. A band played King of the Road as the Kunst brothers headed East to circumambulate the earth with exception of the oceans. Dave returned triumphant 4 years, three months and 16 days later from the West. John was shot and killed in Afghanistan on October 21, 1972.
