Chair, Glider

1890s Glider Chair. Material: wood, metal, textile. Size: 25" x 45" H. Description: golden oak frame, two carved horizontal head and back panels feature several motifs including a star; backrest consists of 10 spindles attached at top and bottom to a curved oak panel; wide oak arm rests attached at front and back to upright oak posts; the seat is upholstered with a gold velvet fabric; a glider is a type of rocking chair that moves as a swing seat, where the entire frame consists of a seat attached to the base by means of a double-rocker four-bar linkage; the non-parallel suspension arms of the linkage cause the chair to simulate a rocking-chair motion as it swings back and forth.
Donor states that he acquired this chair from the August Rosinsky farm attic north of Waseca and had the chair refinished and reupholstered. It was used in the Lortis home for many years in St. Paul before it was donated to the Waseca County Historical Society.
