Grant McColley was the son of E. A. McColley of New Richland. He entered the service on September 5, 1918 and did guard duty at Camp Grant, Illinois as a member of a company of Infantry Replacement Troops. While there he contracted influenza (the Spanish Flu) and spent several weeks recuperating in the Army hospital. Many of his fellow soldiers did not survive the influenza.
