Memories of World War One. Material: paper. Size: 6" x 9". Description: dark glossy card stock cover with script print title, "An American Soldiers Memories of World War One, [by] Andrew Breck 1895-1978. Contents: unnumbered pages of the recorded memories of a Waseca County resident who as a young man trained in the streets of Waseca in 1917 as part of the newly formed Battery B under officers, Waseca business men Peter Madden and Paul Stucky; 72 boys were drafted in February 1918 and were sent by train to Albert Lea, fitted with uniforms, underwent physicals and began their military service.
Andrew Breck spent months fighting in World War One in Germany and France. He fought in the trenches, was wounded and sent to a hospital in France. His company lost track of him and sent a telegram back to his parents in Waseca County saying their son Andrew was missing in action. Two Waseca men, head of the local Red Cross Chapter, were Fred Senn and Ed Everett; they notified the Red Cross in France to try to find Breck. After he recovered, he went back into service until the war was over and returned to Waseca in June 1919. Breck collected and retold many stories during his time in the Army. The book also includes with one recipe for a World War One beef-based stew, "Slumgullion".
