Donor explained that Ronald and Ruth were married before the beginning of World War II - WWII but could not announce it otherwise Ronald would have been removed from his pilot position. After Ronald died in the war his pension did not go to Ruth because the government did not know of their marriage. In the photograph, Ruth is also wearing wings, she may have been a nurse in the war or the wings belonged to Ronald and that was their way of secretly announcing their marriage.
