July 28, 1974 at Newport Pier in Newport Beach, California Dave and Pete are presented with an American mule they named Willie Will Makeit II. After touching the Pacific Ocean the last leg of the walk was in motion. Pete decided not to walk to Waseca, Minnesota but he would be there for the finish. Presented with a mule retired from Knotts Berry Farm Dave walked with Willie Will Makeit II until she got stubborn and refused to move. Dave took I-15, I-70, I-76 and I-80 across the USA using a small back pack to carry food. He had two canteens for water.
