The violent confrontation occurred about ninety miles South of Kabul along the Kabul River on the road to the Khyber Pass of Pakistan. After John and Dave were shot and fell to the ground, Dave hollered "play dead." It was too late for John but Dave managed to fool the killers into thinking he too had been killed. Dave survived to walk another day. John ended his search in life.
