White Leather Football. Material: leather. Size: Description: white leather - football is covered with signatures of the entire 1934 WHS football team, plus the 1934 University of Minnesota "Gopher" football team including coach Bernie Bierman who was born in Waseca.
1934 Waseca High School white football - originally used in the first WHS football game played at night with lights - funds to pay for the lights were raised by selling tickets, organized by the WHS biology teacher "Step and a Half" Barrett. The night games became so popular, the lights were paid for by the middle of the season, and Mr. Barrett announced it on the loudspeaker; the donor, Manley Youngberg played in that game; later his daughter Susan Youngberg found the football in the estate of Charlie Gray who had purchased it at a school sale years ago; Susan then gave it to her father, Manley Youngberg. Bob Mishek arranged for the WHS football team to attend a U of M Gopher game in 1934 and was able to secure the autographs of all of the Gopher team plus that of coach Bernie Bierman (born in Waseca) for the football. WHS players: James West; Jack Turnacliff, lived in south end of Waseca, was one year older, became VP of Ford Co.; Fernly Johnson, attended Vista Covenant Church, grew up with Youngberg, confirmed at the same time, became an MD in Chicago, lives in Betavia, IL, was a medical missionary in Zaire (Congo) for seven years, Youngberg's best friend, lived in Otisco, thought he was Edgar Johnson's nephew, son of Ludwig Johnson, Edgar gave Fernly some parts for a one-time radio project - See Vista Book; Stan Bilben, from Sacred Heart; some boys went to WHS because Father Treanor wouldn't allow a football team at Sacred Heart High School; Russ Deputy, President of the senior class 1935; Sylvester Fieberger, was one of the shortest guys on the team; Rudy Ramseth, son of Pastor Ramseth of Grace Lutheran Church, WHS football team captain, Youngberg's close friend, lives in Chicago; Stewart Hanson, Youngberg's second cousin, lived on farm eventually bought by Charlie and Bonnie Priebe; L. H. Krough, coach, good and direct style of coaching; Charlie Gray, a very good friend, purchased the white football at the school sale after it had been on display at the school for decades. Charlie's daughter Laura gave it to Youngberg's daughter Susan to give to Manley for his birthday; Roland Malloy, 38-Class of 1938; George Panzram, son of Herman Panzram, went on to set athletic records at Mankato State; R.C. Mishek (Bob) WHS business teacher.
