Chain, Surveyor's
1900 Approximate
Alphabet Railroad Surveyor Chain. Material: metal, leather. Size: 6" links extend for many feet. Description: metal chain; heavy metal handles at each end; narrow black strap wrapped around chain bundle.
Used to survey the "Alphabet Line" through Matawan and Waldorf. A railroad surveyor lost it during a poker game to "Colonel" Doyle in Waldorf, ca 1907. Note with gift agreement: "This chain was used originally in measuring land for the railroad bed when the railroad first came to Plum Valley now called Waldorf, Minn. This chain came into our possession from John (Jack) Dayle whose father "Colonel" Dayle won it in a poker game from a surveyor who worked for the railroad. We received permission to give this chain to the museum from Jack Dayle's daughter, Mrs. Earle Nelson who lives in Okabena, MN. Mr. Dayle was a first cousin of my late husband Leo Hawkins. Signed Mrs. Leo Hawkins."
