Brown Bombazine Dress of Mrs. Brandenburg. (a) Dress jacket. Material: textile, metal. Size: 17" W. shoulder to shoulder x 27 1/2" L. Description: brown bombazine - ecru collar - long, below hip length - high round neckline - 1 1/2" W. ecru crocheted, scalloped lace collar - front closure with fourteen hidden hooks and eyes - fourteen self-covered metal buttons trim the closure from neckline to bottom edge of jacket - metal hook and eye at front neckline - tailored fit flares out from waistline - long sleeves encircled at lower arm with two rows of 2 1/4" W. pleated trim - same pleated trim extends around neckline and plunges to a v-shape at mid-bodice . (b) Skirt. Material: textile and metal. Size: 64" W. at bottom hemline x 37" L. x 14" W. at waistline. Description: dark brown bombazine - lined with brown cotton - floor length - wide skirt pleated to narrow waistband - back closure with hooks and eyes in a 10 1/2" L. placket - two rows of 4 1/2" W. narrowly pleated trim encircles skirt above hemline - worn areas patched with iron-on material.
Gown worn by Mrs. Brandenburg on her wedding day in Alton Township February 13, 1879. Mrs. Brandenburg died in 1929 according to donor.
