Walter Mickelson. 4 1/2" x 6 3/4" black and white photograph of Walter K. Mickelson, "born in Mankato, graduated from Mankato High School in the class of 1915; attended Hamline University, 1915-1917; was editor of the Waseca Journal, 1922-24; published the Delavan Enterprise in 1924-25. After leaving Delavan, he was the publisher of Stoughton, Wis. Daily Courier from 1925-30. In 1930 he published the Blooming Prairie Times and he edited this paper until 1938. In 1938 he purchased an interest in the New Ulm Daily Journal and became its editor and publisher and is still the publisher at the present time. He served in the First World War. In 1935-36 he served as Assistant Administrator W.P.A. In 1936-37 he served as Secretary to Senator Shipstead. In 1942 he was a candidate for U.S. Senate, but although he made a wonderful run, he was defeated by Senator Ball for the nomination in the Republican Primaries. It was during his residence in Waseca that I met Mr. Mickelson and ever since I have considered him as one of my best friends. During all these years it has been only the last few years that we agreed on politics, but nevertheless, we respect each other. Often during the time I had a road job, I always looked forward to the day when I was to make New Ulm. We always had a standing luncheon date and I always enjoyed an hour of discussion. I will never forget when he said, "Herman, we must be getting old for I never thought the time would come when we would agree on politics." Mr. Mickelson is a man that believes in principles and his editorials carry out that part. He is considered as one of the very best editorial writers in Minnesota. He is married and has three children. I shall always have a lot of respect for his convictions. A real friend and well posted on government affairs. January 24, 1945"
During Herman Peterson's work at the Waseca County Historical Society, he collected portraits and biographies of many friends and Waseca area businessmen and professionals.
