Harold Sponberg. 7 1/4" x 9" black and white photograph of Harold E. Sponberg, "was born on September 26, 1918 in Otisco Township, Waseca County, the son of Mr. and Mrs. (Hulda Peterson) A. F. Sponberg. He received his B.S. Degree, Gustavus Adolphus College in 1940; his Master's Degree, University of Minnesota in 1942; his Ph.D. at Michigan State University in 1952; Dr. Sponberg became Vice-president of North Michigan College in 1956; had the responsibility for the curriculum, academic affairs, and faculty personnel. The first Vice-president in Northern's history, he formerly was Director of University Extension in the Kellogg Center at Michigan State University. He joined the Michigan State faculty in 1946 as an assistant professor in English and speech; later he became assistant Dean of Students and Director of Educational Placement. In 1953-54 he was Executive Secretary of the national 4H Club Foundation in Washington D.C. During his career as a teacher and educator, he has taught in one-room country schools and at the high school, college and university levels. He continues to work closely with youth groups, the public schools and professional educational organizations. During WWII he served four years (1942-46) with the Navy submarine forces. A senior grade lieutenant, he was decorated for meritorious service and participated in the surrender of Japan. In 1943 he married Grace Miller. They are the parents of four children, Arvid Frederic, Mary Grace, Eric Winston and Ingrid Linnea. Harold was baptized and confirmed in the Vista Lutheran Church. Teal and myself were sponsers at the time he was baptized. He is a very fluent speaker and a man that I admire very highly, and I am glad to be his friend. July 21, 1959"
During Herman Peterson's work at the Waseca County Historical Society, he collected portraits and biographies of many friends and Waseca area businessmen and professionals.
