Donor Ellen Tetzloff includes the following history concerning this painting: "The stone house in this 1901 painting by Janesville artist Thomas Savage was built by Savage's next door neighbor, Christopher Jewison. Both lived on the east side of Lake Elysian near Janesville, Minnesota. Jewison emigrated from England to the United States in 1848 where stone houses were common. Jewison chose the stones for his house from the shores of Lake Elysian shown in the background of this painting. (Most people at this time were building their houses from logs or sod.) Christopher Jewison became the father of William Jewison who became the father of Arthur Jewison, the donor's father. The present owner of the farm is a great-grandson of the original builder. The stone house was torn down in 1970. The farm site is located on county road 3 north of Janesville.
