Navy Blue Nylon Raincoat. Material: textile and plastic. Size: 17" W. at shoulders x 44" L. Description: navy blue nylon outer, double-breasted, mid calf length; rounded collar can be raised and secured with tab and button at upper neckline; front closure with five large navy blue buttons and buttonholes; a vertical row of five large navy buttons trim the right bodice opposite the closure buttons; long sleeves with button and buttonhole tabs at wrist line; one kick pleat at center lower back that closes with two navy blue buttons and loops; label inside back neckline: "Made and Sold Under Authority of U.S. Navy - W.A.V.E.S." with naval anchor emblem; identification label inside left front coat: "W.A.V.E.S. - Name - Rate - Contract No. 133 - 10 S. - U.S.N."; navy blue cotton partial lining.
Waseca County Military - U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, SPAR. Dorothy Hodgkins was a SPAR, a member of the women's reserve of the U.S. Coast Guard. ("SPAR" - s(emper) par (atus) means "always ready" and is the motto of the U.S. Coast Guard. From 1943-45, she worked with public health doctors & nurses in sick bay & the dental clinic. She was stationed in St. Augustine, Florida at a Coast Guard training station. Later she was located in Washington, D.C. at Coast Guard headquarters.
