Loaned images from Harold and Pauline Kuehnel, Milwaukee, WI; Harold is the grandson of Herman Kuehnel, restaurant owner and cook in Waseca from 1915 through the 1920s. Herman was the son of Gottfried Kuehnel who came to Minnesota from Germany and farmed near New Ulm in Nicollet County; Herman inherited the farm in 1908, but after a barn fire and tornado gave up farming and moved to Waseca in 1915. He opened up a restaurant called "The Palace Restaurant." When he lost the lease, he moved across the street and opened "Herman's Place" later in 1916.
