Crayon portraits were photographic enlargements in which a weak photographic image was used as the basis for hand rendering with charcoal or pastels. These portraits were popular from the 1860s through the end of the 19th century. Both printed-out and developing-out images on matte-surfaced papers were the photographic methods. These prints are often mistaken as original portrait artwork, but they are photographically based. LU designation means that the image only was borrowed and scanned into our database by permission of the owner. Actual possession of the photograph was retained by the owner and not transferred to WCHS.
