Description: black gabardine - V-neckline with sailor collar - crest and "USMS" on each back collar corner - long sleeves - square black patch on right sleeve with red stitching: "USMS" and the Merchant Marine crest - red piping at left shoulder sleeve seam indicates rank of oiler - left side breast patch pocket - white label under collar with black lettering: "Size 38, Division Of Training War Shipping_ OM__Tration Cont. WSA 101 T.312.44 Date Sep 16 194_". (b) Pants. Material: textile, plastic. Size: 32" W. waistline size x 42" L. Description: black gabardine - front closure with five black plastic buttons in a fly placket - one pocket on each front side - one pocket on each back hip - one coin pocket.
Waseca County Military - WWII. Worn by donor, Joseph Britton during military service from 1944-46. He served as an "oiler" aboard a freighter named "John Paul Jones." and traveled all over the world but mainly in Europe and South America. During WWII, the Navy had seamen on board to man guns for protection as they hauled military supplies. At the end of WWII, Britton was in Japan. He received an honorable discharge and became a member of the VFW and the American Legion. U.S. Marine uniform includes #85.98.1a,b and # 85.98.3, (tie).
