45 Star U.S. Flag Lewis McKune Post No. 27 GAR. Material: textile. Size: 53 1/2" W. x 60" L. Description: red, white and blue cotton with with red and white horizontal stripes and a blue square containing 45 white stars in upper corner; 45 white stars on blue field; cross-stitched across top: "Lewis McKune, Post No 27, GAR, Waseca, Minn"; gold fringe trim on three sides.
Government. Military. Grand Army of the Republic. In 1846, the American flag contained 29 stars. At the start of the Civil War in 1861, the flag contained 34 stars. By 1898, the flag contained 45 stars. The 49th and 50th stars were added in 1959 and 1960 after Alaska and Hawaii were admitted to the Union.
