Luella Herbst's Graduation Dress. Material: textile. (a) Dress. Size: 13" W. at bodice x 49" L. Description: pale yellow organdy ankle length straight skirt with a back wraparound over skirt at each side; six 1" ruffles at lower back skirt; the 4 1/2" W. collar forms soft lapels to waistline revealing the under bodice with shallow scoop neckline; short sleeves have a 1" W. cuff and two 1" encircling ruffles; . (b) Sash/Cumberbund. Size: 7" W. x 125" L. Description: yellow organdy with two rows of 1" W. ruffles on each end, ties in the back with a large bow.
Worn by Luella Herbst in 1920 when she graduated from Mankato Normal School. Bierman Collection: Bernie Bierman was a football coach at the University of Minnesota for the Golden Gophers. Bernie Bierman was the grandson of a Waseca County pioneer, Heinrich F. Bierman. In 1855, Heinrich made a claim in sections 13, in Wilton and 18 in Otisco where he lived until December 22, 1882, when he was accidentally killed by a fall from a wagon. His wife and five children lived in Waseca after his death. Luella and Marguerite Herbst are the granddaughters of Mr. and Mrs. Heinrich Bierman, and the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Herbst. Mrs. Herbst was Elizabeth Bierman. They also donated items from Mr. and Mrs. D.E. Perrin. Mrs. Perrin was Emma Bierman.
