Herter's Gunpowder Scale. Material: metal, glass, plastic, wood, paper. (a) Scale. Size: 2 1/4" x 6 3/4" x 3" H. Description: green baked on enamel finish on a cast metal body stamped "Herter's Inc. Since 1893, Waseca, Minn. Pat. Pend."; vertical projections at each end to hold the beam; small black metal level tube attached to side of stand. (b) Beam. Size: 3/8" x 9" with 1" projection. Description: chrome plated horizontal brass beam with graduated markings to measure grains up to a 325 capacity; oil cup is center in the upright beam; resisting fin mounted under fulcrum operates in the oil cup. (c) Powder cup. Size: 2 1/2" diameter x 1/2" with a 1/2" extended lip handle. Description: aluminum cup with flat rim and short extended handle. (d) Cup holder. Size: 2 1/2" diameter x 1" H. Description: aluminum wire circle with upward extension ending in a small hook. (e) Funnel. Size: 2 1/2" diameter x 2 1/4" H. Description: clear plastic "Tenite" tapered cup with opening in bottom to accommodate funneling powder from 22 to 45 calibers; hand lined with paper and masking tape. (e) Box. Size: 4" x 10" x 4 1/2" H. Description: pine box with hinged lid and top hook closer accommodates the storage of the powder scale and accessories.
This scale was found in the collection of a Texas resident who donated it to the Waseca County Historical Society.
