Skull, Bison
Bison Skull. Material: bone. Size: 5 1/2" x 13" x 30". Description: large aged and petrified bone skull identified as bison or buffalo; presents as the top half of skull; extends to the area of the eye sockets; includes both horns; red stain on forehead.
Bison Skull Dated by University of Minnesota paleontologists in 1969 to be 8000-10,000 Years old. This skull was found in the Le Sueur River near Alma City, NW corner of County Road 3 and 9, south of Janesville in the northwest corner of Waseca County, by farmers Alfred and Herman Risto. They later donated the skull to the Waseca County Historical Society. In 1971, Mr. Risto said that when the skull was found it had a jaw bone and teeth. 5-23-2008 a visitor (Barb or Deb Denn) said that her father, Alfred Risto had donated a buffalo skull to the museum. She said that three Risto brothers came over from Germany. They each had their own farm. Donor, Dick Sandberg was on the Waseca County Historical Society Board of Directors from 1961 - 1979, Vice President of the Board in 1972 and 1973.
